The value series: Five under $25… from VinoNueva

We recommend some great value wines from VinoNueva.

Want to explore the world of wines, but without breaking the bank? We’ve got you covered. This article is part of a mini-series on interesting value wines from our favorite retailers. Expect more over the coming months (and subscribe to our newsletter to stay in the loop).

The wines were chosen with three things in mind: quality, value, and an ability to transport you around the wine world.

About VinoNueva

VinoNueva only opened its doors in 2021, but it has already earned a reputation for offering a thoughtful selection of mostly European wines. The duo behind it is Bernardo and Ana Villanueva, both wine lovers who were inspired to create exactly the sort of store that they’d like to shop at. Think fresh, terroir-led wines from serious winemakers.

This is exactly what fills the shelves: fine wine aplenty. Fortunately, however, Bernardo’s selection of lower priced wines is just as careful. Many are offered for less than $25 – ideal for weeknight indulgence.

Tenuta delle Terre Nere – Etna Bianco 2020 – $25

If you’ve watched The Barolo Boys, the short film about new-wave Barolo producers taking the US by storm in the ‘80s and ‘90s, you’ll recognize Terre Nere owner Marco de Grazia’s name. He was the importer that backed a ‘modern’ style of Barolo: think concentration, new French oak, high prices.

His attractive white wine from the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna is a little different. Slightly zesty, with honeysuckle and peach, then beautifully soft-textured – a little waxy. Ideal with a summer salad, and delivers comfortably above its $25 price point.

Available for $25

Triennes – Méditerranée IGP Rosé 2020 – $17.85

Two producers of the world’s greatest (and, um, most expensive) Burgundy joined forces to create… a southern French rosé. This may seem a little crazy, but here we are with this join project between Jacques Seysses (Domaine Dujac) and Aubert de Villaine (Domaine de la Romanée-Conti).

The result is, as you’d expect, a delightful wine: totally dry, restrained but attractive red fruits, refreshing. Less predictably, it’s also extremely good value. Phew.

Available for $17

Sandro Fay – Rosso di Valtellina ‘Téi’ 2019 – $23

We couldn’t resist including one of our former wines of the week. This unusually crushable Nebbiolo is from Valtellina, way up in the north of Lombardy, close to the border with Switzerland. It has refreshing berry fruits, delicate rose petals, liquorice, white pepper, and soft chalky tannins.

And as we said before, its the sort of wine that leaves you quickly reaching for a second, third, fourth glass. Which is surely a sign of success.

Available for $23

Yves Cuilleron – ‘Les Vignes d’ à Côte’ Syrah 2020 – $20

“Value Northern Rhone Syrah” can have mixed results. This is one of the successes: It combines attractive but not overt black and blue fruits with lifted aromatics that give the sense of freshness and flair. The kind of wine that garnishes a Tuesday night burger with a sense of inexpensive sophistication. If you know what we mean.

Available for $20

Raventos i Blanc Conca del Riu Anoia Brut Blanc de Blancs 2018 – $21

Raventos i Blanc has earned a reputation for being one of the leading producers of sparkling wine in Spain. And rightly so: its flagship wine is a delight.

This comes from Penedes – best known as the home of Cava. Instead of using the Cava name, Raventos labels its wines as Conca del Riu Anoia, a tiny zone between the mountains, in inland Penedes. It uses the traditional Cava trio of grapes: Xarel-lo, Paralelleda, Macabeo, and a little Malvasia.

The result is an elegant, highly refreshing bottle with subtle green apple, blossom and lemon zest. One of the best sparkling wines under $25? Probably.

Available for $21 (what!?)

VinoNueva is located at 5582 NE 4th Ct, Miami, FL 33137.
