Wine of the Week: Catie San Touraine 2019

Catie San Touraine is made with Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown in Touraine near the Sancerre AOC.

We are lucky here in Miami to have some fantastic wine professionals who are both passionate and innovative. One of those professionals is Erin Jolley, founder of Drink the Rent, a French wine importer. Catie San Touraine is one of the wines she brings to us here in Miami.

Erin’s Drink the Rent portfolio focuses on small, thoughtful producers. That means low-intervention wines with an emphasis on sustainable farming. Some of these wineries are making wine in top regions, or just outside of them – offering great value bottles.

In this industry, it is often the label that drives pricing, and price and quality are not always directly linked. With a wine like Catie San, we see the best of Touraine shine through, without the steeper prices of other nearby AOCs or fancy packaging.

In fact, the label is simple and sweet. A walking fish with a megaphone toting a suitcase below a pair of flying ears. How’s that for an unpretentious wine? Are you curious now?

Catie San has a creative label.

Catie San Touraine 2019

This wine is 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Touraine region of the Loire Valley in France. Bright, pale yellow in color, you can tell already this wine has star quality. On the nose, subtle lemony zest and delicate white flowers. In the mouth, it’s floral and full of fresh minerality, with well-balanced acidity. No malolactic fermentation or oak on this wine, so it stays quite zippy. But six months on lees adds a touch of complexity.

The soft white flowers and pop of lemon land on the tongue and stay singing for a nice, lingering but gentle finish.

I would say to make sure and invite Catie San to any outdoor event. Keep her well chilled, and she’ll keep you feeling refreshed all evening long.
