Wine of the week: Elena Walch, Kristallberg Pinot Bianco 2020

Today we bring you characterful Italian white that can be sourced for under $20 a bottle – but tastes like it should cost more. Introducing the Elena Walch Kristallberg Pinot Bianco.

There is a lot going on here. First up, it’s zesty: orange peel and green apple layered over sweet lemon. And then it’s incredibly textured – a little creamy, a touch of grip – and with vibrant, refreshing acidity. The finish is all quince and spice. And lots of it.

Could this be the secret love child of an Alsatian Pinot Gris and an Austrian Gruner? (Maybe: You never know what you’ll hear in the news these days.)

This complexity – “pour me another glass so I can figure this out!” – comes thanks to Elena Walch, one of the most celebrated winemakers in Alto Adige. You may remember her from Beyond the Clouds, the Chardonnay-based blend that has all the critics talking. (It also costs quite a bit more than this Pinot Bianco.)

It’s also thanks to Alto Adige, the quality-focused region in the very north of Italy that borders Austria and Switzerland. Think alpine mountains (high altitude – hello acidity), Germanic architecture, and… the cold. And, more importantly, wines with freshness and precision.

Exactly what we need – the wine and the weather – during this warm Miami summer.

Available in various South Florida retail stores, including Happy Wine Calle Ocho (Elena Walch Kristallberg Pinot Bianco:$18.99) Looking for more info about Happy Wine? Look no further.
