In this letter from West Palm Beach, our friend and fine wine expert Cory Lipoff recommends a trip to one of the county’s top Italian restaurants…La Sirena.
Located off the beaten path in West Palm Beach, Marcello’s La Sirena is among our favorite restaurants in the Palm Beach area. In this iconic second-generation Italian restaurant, Marcello Fiorentino (chef and son of the founders) and his wife Diane (who runs the front of house) continue the traditions of this exceptional venue. La Sirena provides big city Michelin star quality food and service, with perhaps the finest, most comprehensive, and reasonably priced wine list in Palm Beach County. It has been a Wine Spectator Grand Award winner for as long as we can remember.
La Sirena’s Many Wines…
Treasures abound among the more than 1,500 selections on the list. La Sirena offers half bottles and large format wines. For those seeking to enjoy wine on a smaller budget, there are 50 wines under $50 and a sizable wine by the glass program. The list features wines from all over the world.
The extensive Italian section includes fairly priced Super Tuscans, such as Masseto and Ornellaia, note-worthy Brunellos, such as Soldera from the 90’s and, a personal favorite, Casanova di Neri (both Cerretalto and Tenuta Nuova are available in several vintages). Finally, loads of Barolo’s and Barbaresco’s from such greats as Giacosa, Conterno, and especially Gaja, as well as lesser-known varieties from all over the country.
The list contains considerable selections of Burgundy (including DRC), Bordeaux (how about a crazy vertical of Lafite?), and California cult wines (Colgin, Harlan Estate, and Opus One), to name a few. You will also find Australian Penfolds Cabs, eclectic wines such as the Lebanese Musar, and a large selection of “stickies,” including d’Yquem and aged Ports.
Make the trip to this unlikely West Palm Beach location, and you will enjoy your wine in La Sirena’s warm, welcoming and well-appointed setting, along with its world class Italian cuisine (classic dishes and the best Branzino on this side of the Mediterranean!). Off season, you should also check out the special, discounted, producer-driven wine dinners featuring a prix fixe menu, which is one of the best fine dining values you can find anywhere. Marcello’s La Sirena is a phenomenal restaurant and a required stop for any true wine lover in South Florida.
Love this restaurant. Cheers!
